Profile of Spotlight Award Winners

Over the years, the Event Solutions Spotlight Awards have introduced us to some of the most creative professionals in our industry. From up and comers to seasoned pros, we see hundreds of amazing submissions each year.

But becoming a finalist, and thus a winner, is no easy feat. It takes a lot of hard work throughout the year to design and produce quality events worthy of recognition by your peers. And just like most things in life, it pays off at the annual Spotlight Awards event when you get to stand up in front of your peers and be recognized as one of the best.

These 2013 award winners share what being a Spotlight Award winner really means to them.

Spotlight Award: Rental Company of the Year and Marketing Professional of the Year

What was your initial reaction when you were announced the Rental Company of the Year and Marketing Professional of the Year at the 2013 Spotlight Awards?

The entire CORT organization was very excited and proud to win Rental Company of the Year for the 3rd time. The award means a lot to our organization because our loyal client partners help select the winner, and we’re honored those clients recognize the hard work and dedication of the team.

I was particularly honored to win Marketing Professional of the Year because my fellow nominees are esteemed professionals whom I respect, and I felt humbled to get the award.

What about your products and company do you think stood out during the judging, as a nominee and a finalist?

I think CORT was recognized for leadership in the event industry, including everything from creating proprietary products for event professionals to setting high standards of customer service, and supporting the industry associations such as NACE, ISES and MPI over the past 13 years.

What does being a Spotlight winner mean to you?

Being a Spotlight winner means being a part of an elite group of respected professionals who have been recognized for their contributions to the event industry and I try to live up to that high standard every day.

Every team member at CORT wears the honor with pride and it makes our drive to serve our clients and the event industry even greater.

Why do you think companies and individuals in our industry should enter the 2014 Spotlight Awards?

Companies and individuals should enter the awards because there is so much creativity and talent in our industry that deserves to be recognized.

Spotlight Award: Organizational Planner of the Year

What was your initial reaction when you were announced the Organizational Professional of the Year at the 2013 Spotlight Awards?

I was completely surprised! The other professionals in my categories have done amazing work and I felt appreciated to be in the same category. But I was overjoyed by the recognition when my name was called! It was an honor to represent Women’s College, Historically Black Colleges and the nonprofit field. We work hard and we are in the trenches making great events happen.

What about your work do you think stood out during the judging, as a nominee and a finalist?

I think that while I did events with huge leaders such as First Lady Michelle Obama and icon Oprah Winfrey, the work that I do with our student event team, the Event Envoys, stood out and show I am paying it forward. Teaching college students how to get into a field where you can use any major that you have – English, Psychology, Economics or any other Liberal Arts field is very rewarding. Sharing the knowledge that you have to write well, think analytical and critically, one can get into any field in hospitality because those skills are highly valued.

What does being a Spotlight winner mean to you?

It’s a huge honor to be recognized by the Event Solutions organization. They are the best publication when it comes to ideas and thinking outside the box. Plus the best industry professionals support this organization and it’s great to be in good company.

What does being a Spotlight winner mean to your company/university?

When I returned from the Event Solutions Conference, my students and colleagues were so proud! They helped me work the voting campaign and really showed me the power of social media. Many of the colleagues had not heard of Event Solutions so it was an eye opener for them.

Why do you think companies and individuals in our industry should enter the 2014 Spotlight Awards?

I think that more educational institutions (specifically Women’s Colleges and Historical Black Colleges and Universities) and nonprofits need to enter into the awards process with Event Solutions because they deserve the recognition. These organizations work extremely hard and produce amazing results that impact the people and communities they serve. From raising large amounts of funding for all kinds of causes like scholarships, internships, breast cancer, sickle cell anemia, heart disease, natural and human disasters; nonprofits work tirelessly with limited resources and labor. But yet, sometimes, their success is not shared. Their worthy energy should be acknowledged and applauded by others, especially in the hospitality field.

Heather Hawes, CMP will be speaking at the 2014 Event Solutions Conference & Tradeshow on March 25, 2014 at the Paris Hotel Las Vegas. Learn more about the upcoming event here and register today!

Nominations are open for the 2014 Spotlight Awards until December 13, 2013. Nominate your team today and let the spotlight shine on you!
