Back in 2008 when the market took a turn for the worse, Boxman Studios founder Dave Campbell was looking for the next big thing in real estate when he came across an article about shipping container architecture. Piquing his interest, Campbell took a gamble with a new business plan and sought to create the first company in the world to recommission shipping containers as a form of temporary and mobile real estate.

Now in its 6th year, Boxman Studios is consistently finding new ways to expand their designs and enter new markets, including the event industry. Working under three pillars, Design, Develop and Deploy, the team works with clients throughout the event industry to create unique structures out of repurposed shipping containers that will intrigue and excite event guests.

Boxman has created customized structures for an assortment of corporate events from pop-ups for Adidas to a traveling store for Red Bull. And although they request a 60-day lead time, simplified projects can be built in a matter of weeks and shipped to the client internationally for an event.

Others can be set up in a matter of hours after the right amount of planning. For Lay’s “Do Us a Flavor” campaign event in Times Square, the team had 24 hours to set up and tear down a 2-story structure complete with an air-conditioned VIP suite and an enlarged chip wall. Even with rain and a quick turnaround, “it all went swimmingly,” says marketing associate Vinay Patel, “and we even had Eva Longoria and Chef Michael Symone in our units, which was really cool.”

Each container is customized for the client’s needs, whether they want a restored container or full structures created out of recycled container parts, like the IMG PlayMaker’s Club temporary structure built for IMG College seen below, ensuring a unique experience whether the container is rented for one event or purchased for continual use.

“Honestly, we all get excited about every build. We believe whole-heartedly in continuous improvement, so it seems that we’re always coming up with a new innovation, or process, or tool for each new project,” says Patel.

With new ventures in the works, the team at Boxman is consistently evolving and creating new ways to incorporate these sustainable structures into events. “We’re always doing something we’ve never done before which is just a great feeling. Talk to me again in a few years, I can’t wait to see what we will have made.”
